You may no longer be able to purchase new PSTN lines after the 5th September

As the digital world keeps evolving, we find ourselves bidding farewell to yet another technology that has played an essential role in our daily lives for decades. On 5th September 2023, the telecommunications industry will mark a significant milestone as the Stop Sell of Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) lines will take effect. This significant move will pave the way for a future characterised by digital innovation and connectivity. This means no new copper PSTN lines will be installed after the 5th September in areas that have FTTP or SoGEA  available but, if you currently have a PSTN line, you will still be able to use it… for now.

In a few years’ time, your copper PSTN line will be obsolete. By this point, you must make the switch to a digital phone system (VoIP) or face your business landline becoming unusable.

Why do we need a Stop Sell?

The PSTN, which has been the backbone of global voice communication for over a century, uses traditional copper wires to transmit analogue signals. Over the years, PSTN lines have connected homes, businesses, and institutions, enabling voice conversations across vast distances. However, as technology has progressed, the limitations of the PSTN have become increasingly apparent. These limitations include limited bandwidth, susceptibility to interference, and the inability to transmit data and voice simultaneously. That’s why BT made the decision to gradually phase out PSTN and introduce ultra-fast fibre to the nation, with the Stop Sell coming into effect on the 5th September for FTTP or SoGEA supported areas and the complete End of Life taking place in a few years’ time.

How will this help your business?

For businesses, the transition away from PSTN lines represents an opportunity to streamline operations, reduce costs and enhance communication capabilities. Cloud-based communication solutions powered by VoIP enable companies to integrate voice, video and messaging into a unified platform, fostering collaboration and improving customer interactions. Additionally, businesses can enjoy greater flexibility by enabling remote work and expanding their reach to global markets.

Here at Logic, our tried and tested Logi-Flow phone system is the must-have VoIP for your business as you enter the modern world of telecommunications.
