A Success Story: FD Fire Door

FD Fire Door Case Study

Context

One early morning in 2017 at 3:30am, Brian Ferguson decided to take a business management course. This then snowballed into an 18 hour stretch of time working on a plan to begin his own business, after which he purchased a new mobile phone just for work and set up an entire website. Thus, FD Fire Door came to be.

Within just one year, Brian received more inquiries than at his full-time job. It soon became evident that FD Fire Door was only going to grow in success.

During the Covid-19 lockdown, FD Fire Door experienced an unexpected surge in demand, working with four NHS trusts to inspect fire doors while wards were empty.

As the company expanded, Brian rebuilt its website and established key certifications and accreditations, eventually becoming the only Cumbrian businesses offering a fully compliant, all-in-one fire door consultancy service, providing a wide range of fire door inspection and assessments, online cloud-based fire door asset management, training, mentoring and a specification service.

Today, the business employs four internal staff, seven external workers and collaborates with subcontractors and freelance contractors. Brian’s wife, Susanna, has also joined the company, reinforcing the family-driven commitment to quality and compliance in fire door safety.

“We are highly experienced, qualified and trusted by local authorities, housing associations, NHS, universities, property managers and other organisations who use our fire door consultancy services” – Brian Ferguson, Managing Director

Objective

As business grew at FD Fire Door, so did the need for comprehensive and powerful technology.  Their first priority was keeping their clients’, workers’ and other connections’ data safe from cyber threats. Logic Business Systems’ installation of WatchGuard cyber security followed shortly after, along with Microsoft 365.

“We contacted a few local companies. Logic Business Systems was the only company that was interested in understanding what FD Fire Door needed to suit their present and future needs. John provided help and advice.” – Susanna Ferguson, Operations Director

Next came the need for simple, effective communication between customers, suppliers and departments. As with any successful business, the key to excellent service is quick correspondence, and FD Fire Door’s current system wasn’t quite keeping up with demand, especially as they prepared to move into their new premises.

“It was challenging to manage with only mobile phones, and we possibly missed business. We weren’t as professional as we are now. We didn’t know who was calling, and it didn’t show FD Fire Door in the best light.” – Brian

During a call with Janet, Sales Manager at Logic Communications, she suggested installing the Logi-Flow VoIP mobile application, and then integrating it with new desk phones, keeping communication consistent throughout the entire organisation.

Deployment

Installing FD Fire Door’s new Logi-Flow phone system was a speedy, straight-forward process. Logic’s Senior IT Support Technician, Thomas, worked diligently to install Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) cabling, set up the telephone system, and configure Wi-Fi access points, ensuring everything functioned smoothly. The Logi-Flow web and mobile applications are designed for ease of use, requiring only a brief overview before effortlessly integrating into daily operations.

Throughout the process, both Thomas and Janet remained available to discuss FD Fire Door’s ever-evolving office requirements, providing expert guidance and support along the way.

“Everyone at Logic Business Systems is trained in their specific field. They acted as consultants, listened to our requirements and recommended solutions and services that met our business needs.” – Susanna

Result

FD Fire Door are making the most of their easy, comprehensive Logi-Flow phone system, able to quickly take and make calls wherever they may be – from their daily office desks to sunny holiday destinations!

“I like the feature that I can answer calls from the landline anywhere in the world. In the future, the plan is that we can work from anywhere, whilst maintaining local presence.” – Brian

Their new FTTP broadband allows them to take online meetings from their premises with clients across the UK, without the fear of lagging connections cutting their calls short.

These newly installed systems are designed to support long-term growth, providing a strong foundation for expansion and scalability. With a well-structured backbone in place, this technology can easily adapt future developments at FD Fire Door, ensuring continued progress and success.

“Logic took a consultancy approach to our business operations. They took time to understand our present and future requirements. They helped with our IT and telecoms and provided a solution that allows FD Fire Door to grow and operate nationally.” – Brian
